Astro’s Playroom is as old as the PlayStation 5, and this is most likely the first game new owners booted up. Despite being a brief experience, this is the kind of game that can be played with family members and is worth playing in 2025. Sony Interactive Entertainment finally nailed the platforming genre, and it only took a cute little robot to give them the courage to innovate. Yet another unlockable display for the Labo area is a Bot throwing a blue boomerang around. The shape is a reference to the infamous “Boomerang” prototype controller, an unofficial name for the controller that was shown alongside the PlayStation 3 when it debuted.
The only unknown one is the one with the Ethernet port, which doesn’t match any PlayStation system. These icons were displayed on the back of PS1 game boxes to show what features the game supported. I went into this game expecting it to be nothing more than a quick tech demo, I was very wrong. What I was meet with was a platformer where you played as a charming little robot in a world that has a better art style then most modern games. Astro’s Playroom is the perfect game to play first to kick off the PlayStation 5 generation. It’s a fluid and fun 3D platformer sure, but it being built around showing off what the DualSense controller can add to gaming Is what really starts to make it special. Add in all of the PlayStation love letters scattered about inside these worlds and you have another magical, must-play experience from Team Asobi. I wish Astro’s latest adventure lasted longer but I have no doubt that we’ll be seeing more of the new PlayStation mascot in the future.

Jump and hold over top of it to ignite it, and when it explodes it reveals this puzzle piece underneath. Puzzle Piece 3/4– At the next checkpoint there are some spots you can bounce on to climb up the platforms. Instead of going up, bounce to the opposite side to find this puzzle piece underneath the platform. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – Just after the next checkpoint, there are a bunch of explosive enemies on the ground you can light using your ship thrusters. When they explode they destroy the ground, revealing an area with this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – Directly to the left of the first checkpoint there is a hole you can drop down with a bunch of coins and this puzzle piece in the middle.
If you miss and trigger the checkpoint on the lower platform you’ll need to restart the level to try again, if you don’t trigger it you can just jump off the side. To fly as far as possible you should hold the controller tilted back the whole way, then jump when you want to drop. Also at the second Checkpoint, head left along the cliff to find a Bot kneeling in front of a lad with a staff. The Bot with the staff is the Maiden in Black, a demon who uses souls collected by the player character to help them level up in the Nexus.

Astro’s Playroom Is The Ps5’s Wii Sports
As you get better at playing games, you’ll get better at being able to make things up as you go. Aside from being a technical showcase, Astro’s Playroom is also a game that was clearly made with a lot of care and passion. Each world is themed after a particular computer component, and one of the main goals is to collect secret items that are all pieces of classic PlayStation hardware. There’s even a trophy room where you can interact with them, using your little robot hands to turn on a gigantic PSP Go, or hop on the eject button of an original PlayStation to see the lid pop open. At its most basic, Astro’s Playroom is a fairly straightforward platforming game. You play as a cute little robot named Astro, exploring four different worlds set in a universe that appears to exist inside of a computer.
There’s a number of these suits where the gameplay switches to 2D and you turn into a robot on a spring, that’s directed via motion controls and a press of the adaptive triggers. There’s also a rocket that works in a similar manner but where you have to push past the resistance it offers to fire the jets – which can also set fire to fuses and the game’s Bob-omb stand-ins. The remaining three puzzle pieces are all up the platforming path created when you pull the wire that’s up the ramp between the Memory Meadow and Cooling Springs entrances. Sony Interactive Entertainment realized that shipping Astro’s Playroom as a free demo could set the bar high for what a true next-generation game should feel like.
